Introducing DAF Day: The Story Behind the New Giving Day on 10/10

Today, Chariot announced the launch of the first-ever DAF Day on October 10th, 2024, alongside dozens of nonprofit, DAF and fundraising platform partners

The DAF Day story started several years ago, when a group of friends made a pact to all donate 10% of their income to charity, every year.

They sought a tool to make it easy to track their giving and hold themselves accountable to their shared goal. This search led them to something called a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) - a tax-advantaged charitable giving account that lets you automate contributions, centrally manage your donations, and expand your giving capacity.

It seemed like the perfect answer at first, but something was missing. Whenever they were inspired to make a gift online - like for a giving day - they weren’t able to fully participate.

If they made a gift with their DAF portal, it wasn’t counted in the real-time total, and they were left out of the giving day. If they made a credit card gift, they missed all the benefits of the DAF they were excited about.

It no longer felt like an experience of connection with a community - like their 10% pact. They had to use their DAF all alone, disconnected from the organization.

Two of those friends were Salomon Serfati and Aaron Kahane, who looped in a third, Drew Schneider, as they set out to connect DAF giving directly to those inspirational moments of online fundraising and giving. They founded a payments company dedicated to DAF giving, called Chariot.

Now, Chariot’s big innovation - DAFpay - has embedded 3-click DAF giving into donation forms for tens of thousands of nonprofits around the country.

As Chariot’s partners began to better understand the real value of DAFs to their missions - through research like The DAF Fundraising Report - they realized the possibilities DAFpay offers for more connected DAF giving.

A new idea struck. What if we all decided on a single day to activate DAF donations together? How many more people would take advantage of DAFs to expand their philanthropy? How many DAF donors would give at once if they truly felt connected? How much more giving could we spur with a shared goal?

If this happened on October 10th–10/10, how many folks could even give out 10% of their DAF on a single day, together? Could a national giving day dedicated to DAF giving unlock their full potential of donor advised funds for philanthropy?

We are going to kick this off with the first ever DAF Day on October 10th, 2024. We hope you’ll join us.

Sincerely,

The Chariot Team + DAF Day Launch Partners
